Extra Credit

Cindy Sherman is a photographer. She typically shoots her photographs in series. I would categorize her work as feminist. All the pictures I saw were of women. The photographs aren’t just of women smiling, a lot of the pictures are eccentric looking; different colors, makeup, settings, and hair. She’s been quoted saying, “If I knew what the picture was going to be like I wouldn’t make it. It was almost like it was made already…the challenge is more about trying to make what you can’t think of.” I definitely think Cindy Sherman and Lady Gaga are similar, in perspective. Lady Gaga’s music and appearance are severe and are used to make statements. Lady Gaga reminds me a lot of Madonna, but there isn’t really anything like her. I feel the same about Sherman; both women are unique with their talents.

  1. I agree, except I would go so far as to say that both women are feminists. Usually the word brings negative associations, however; this is unfortunate. I think the role of women is society is expanding, and any celebration of this by popular figures like Sherman, Gaga, or Madonna is a great thing. Although...I do hate Gaga's music.

  2. I love the quote from Cindy Sherman! It really describes her creativity! That's what I think separates her from Lady Gaga. Her purpose is to not only make a statement, but also to create art. I feel like Gaga's is trying to make an immense public statement with every get-up/performance, not really trying to create something beautiful or worthwhile. As Peter said, I wouldn't classify Sherman as a feminist either. I would say she is more of an artist. Although, I'm not sure about Lady Gaga. Honestly, I don't know how to classify her at all...like you said, there is nobody like her!
